About

Happiness for Sale by Jesse Harlin

I originally intened for this work to be exclusively for mobile media. I imagined this being an appropriate video to play for automated product updates on the user end. This service is not widely used now, but I suspect it will gain more popularity; The service being that your mobile device alerts you when a product you have flagged for watching on the internet becomes available.

I thought it would be interesting to have this particular piece play on your mobile device right before you viewd the product. Afterall, advertisers use repetition and conditioning to get you to intentionalyl buy something, seeing this evertime woudl be a a sort of way to combat the psychological warfare inflicted by advertisers. Each time you would look at a prospective buy, you would be thrust into a position of reevaluation.

To this end, the piece is effective. The only problem is I dont see a lot of people putting it on their shiny new iphones anytime soon. (Don't take that the wrong way- those things are pretty cool.) Still, I offer this piece to anyone who wants it as an opportunity to reflect every time Apple lets you know thats theres a new ipod avaiable in some exotic shade of purple.

As a standalone piece I am starting to like it more, it is short but interesting. Seeing only the repetitive smiling faces of paid actors sends a very strange coctail of psychological imagery to the viewer. This paired with the scoring makes for an interesting blend of informaiton.
