Sound has always been the focus of my studies and I always look for more ways I can apply myself
in that capacity. Thus far, I am proud of my accomplishments. I have written
music for movies, played bassoon in orchestras, invented a bizarre live
performance device called the cube, ran sound for an eighties hair metal band,
build my own recording studio, written music for video games, played before
audiences in an industrial band, achieved a high degree of understanding in the
field of sound design, did sound work at an international art convention, and
mastered nearly all sound applications currently on the market. I am a sound
ninja.
If there is anything I have learned about the role of sound in media thus far, it is that sound is
best used in combination with other media. Any sound artist will invariably
brush shoulders with video, installation, programming, and a multitude of other
forms of human expression if they stick with it long enough. Therefore, much
how sound is intrinsically married to all the other senses, I am learning that
my efforts are best applied in areas where more than just sound is happening.
It is obvious then, that the next step is to study other forms of digital
media.
I had begun to branch out into other fields already; I had completed multiple websites and learned applications
such as Flash, After Effects and Final Cut. Other applications, such as
Max/Msp already had very integrated video and sound functions and were luring
me to experiment with more than just sound and music.
It was when Adam Brown invited me to help with the latest chapter of the Upgrade! International that I first got
a taste of the international art community, and how I could contribute to it. I
knew that someone who had collaborated with a computer scientist would be able
to help me in my own personal quest to expand my palette as an artist.
So far I am achieving my goals. I am advancing rapidly in my programming skills, and have gained
greater abilities in microprocessor programming.
